But a dear friend of ours is not.

Marsha Weaver, who has The Cozy Cavy , lost her home and a number of her animals in one of the tornadoes. She and her family are ok, although her daughter was hospitalised. Their home is gone.

Marsha is such a good friend of the bunnies. She took this photo and others of our foster bunnies for our petfinder and web pages, and she has donated fleece and fleece pads for our sanctuary bunnies who need them. Marsha has also had a program to send her fleece products to guinea pigs in rescue all over the US. Her son, Kevin, is a special friend of our sanctuary bunny Esmeralda, who just loves him.

Marsha is just a sweet woman with a beautiful family. She needs our help now, and we want to encourage everyone who loves animals to donate to a fund that has been set up for her. You can read more about Marsha's situation here. To donate, please either donate at the Paypal site on this page with a note that states the donation is for Marsha!!! or go to the fund set up through Sponsor A Guinea Pig. Either way will work fine.

Here is a photo of Ace with one of the beautiful fleece pads that Marsha made for him. Bunnies have been in the news - and not with the usual "Easter Bunny" themes. In fact, quite the opposite!!

Our main fosterer, Ruth, did a segment with T.W. Starr of WAAY 31 about the problems associated with parents getting live bunnies for their children at Easter, and then discarding them. It was a very well done segment, and we appreciate how much effort T.W. and his cameraman put into it. The segment got the point across, and had some very cute footage of bunnies, too! If you want to see it go to WAAY's website then scroll down to the videos. You will probably have to click "Next Five Videos" several times before "Did You Know: Bunny Basket" comes up. Enjoy!!

Next, Yvonne Betowt of the Huntsville Times did a story on our very own Heather Van Dyke and our former foster bunny, Wolfie. They are an animal assisted therapy team with Therapy Partners, and Wolfie is Huntsville's first Delta Certified therapy bunny!!! You can read the article here.

It's so much fun to see them in the paper! Heather has worked very hard for the certification and Wolfie is a very special bunny.

We are very proud of them!!!

An Easter Message!

As most of you know, the issue of bunnies and Easter is very close to our hearts. We have to deal first hand with the number of bunnies who are purchased impulsively as Easter pets for children, only to be abandoned when Easter is over and the thrill has worn off. Starting immediately after the holiday we get calls and emails from parents who want to "get rid of" the bunny, or worse, from people who have found a bunny running stray. Often these bunnies are sick or injured. Even worse are the large groups that show up when people get two bunnies for Easter and don't realise they have a male and female. They think they have two females or two males....until the first litter shows up!! Not realising that bunnies can give birth the day they get pregnant, there are often two or three litters to deal with when people bring them to the shelter or turn them loose. That is a lot of bunnies for us to deal with in rescue - it's no fun at all, for us or the bunnies! Our member Donna wrote a heartfelt email to her friends about this issue, and we wanted to reproduce it here. Donna says: "The Easter season is fast approaching. It is a fun time of year. Some parents may be tempted to buy their children a soft, cute, live bunny. Even worse, buy one for their son and another for their daughter, without knowing the sex of each rabbit. Parents, you may want to really think about it, no matter how much your child begs. Bunnies are not like cats and dogs. Most rabbits do not like to be picked up. I have nine bunnies of my own. A doctor once asked me if I was being abused. He noticed all of the scratches and bruises on my arms. I told him "Yes, by my rabbits." When you pick them up, those big hind legs just push out. Rabbits are living creatures and they have feelings. When "Flop's" mate died, she grieved for a long time. Rabbits can live as long as ten years. Most veterinarians in the area are not as familiar with bunnies as they are with cats and dogs. If you have your mind made up to get a rabbit, check out places like Walmart. They have a huge selection of stuffed bunnies in every size and color imaginable. In a few weeks, when your child grows tired of the bunny and discards it, you will know you made the right choice of a stuffed one, and your child will not have been scratched or bitten." By the way, the cute little furballs in the photos are Donna's bunnies!

Guys and Bunnies Monday: Joe and Ziggy!!

It's Guys and Bunnies Monday!! Today we have the most wonderful photo of Joe and his newly adopted bunny, Ziggy!! Joe and Ziggy had a long distance relationship for awhile, since Joe lives in Boston and Ziggy was here with us. Normally we wouldn't do such a long distance adoption, but Joe is friends with our member, Christy, and he really developed a special bond with Ziggy! It took a lot of planning, and more research into airline policies on flying rabbits than I want to think about, but Ziggy made the trip a couple of weeks ago. He flew in the cabin with Joe, in a very swanky pet carrier! We just got a video of him doing binkies in his new place. You can see it on our Facebook page!

Foster Bunny Friday: Donatella

It's Foster Bunny Friday!! We know a lot of guys who love bunnies, but it seems like rabbits are thought of as a pet for girls/women. Inspired by the Vancouver House Rabbit Society's Men and Buns Calendar, we decided to show off some of our favorite men with their bunnies! Well, this is a very, very young man!! This is our member Brooke's son, Joshua, and one of their bunnies, Daizy. Brooke has had bunnies for years, and we were so happy to adopt Daizy and her sister Daffodil to her and her family a couple of years ago. Daizy and Daffodil came to us with three other young bunnies the week before Easter. They had been found running around a back yard with an older bunny. Daizy has gotten much bigger since then - why, she's almost as big as Joshua!! "Daizy is the sweetest bunny!" writes Brooke. "But Daffodil is a Diva!!" She also says that Joshua and Daizy have a special bond. They appear to be the best of friends. Daizy, you and Daff are some lucky bunnies to have such a handsome young man as a friend!

Friday Foster Bunny: Petey!!!

Our Friday foster bunny is Big Petey!! Petey is actually a sanctuary bunny, which means that his medical issues prohibit him from being adopted, and he will spend the rest of his life in our care. Petey came into Huntsville Animal Services at age five. His people were tired of him, and their kids had grown older. He came into the shelter with a multitude of health issues - bad teeth, respiratory and gastro-intestinal problems, liver issues and even Bell's Palsy. He felt much better after we got him great vet care to fix him up!! But please don't feel sorry for Petey - he is the "Mayor" of the main foster house and gets lots of attention. In fact, unlike our other bunnies he has his own room and spends quite a bit of time hanging out with his foster mom and dad. Petey also has the job of co-chairing (with fellow sanctuary bunny Esmeralda) our HFR meetings. It's a very important job and Petey takes it quite seriously.

Petey would like you to know that if you are thinking of getting a bunny for a child for Easter, you might want to get the stuffed toy kind, like his friend in the photo. He can tell you from sad experience that too many real bunnies wind up at the shelter after Easter!!

Bunny Care Class Poster is Here!!

Thanks to awesome Christy Hulsey, we now have a poster for our Bunny Care 101 Class on April 16th at the Greater Huntsville Humane Society!! Fred is a little mini-rex guy who was born on Halloween. He's one of those rabbits who is so adorable you can't resist kissing him, and he was especially cute because he was wearing a little pink harness. I must say he tolerated it far better than most of the bunnies we know! We were very happy to make the aquaintance of such a stylish and well-behaved boy!

Noelle recently sent me photos of Fred with his stairs, which were specially made for him by Noelle's mom, artist and carpenter Mary Ashby. Among them is a great Year Of The Rabbit graphic.

This graphic is from a woman named Eden, who owns Eden Creative Studio. Her work is wonderful, and she generously has allowed us to use the graphic on our website. Even more generously, she has offered to give Huntsville Friends of Rabbits folks a discount on all purchases made in her store. She has many rabbit themed items, including valentine's Day cards for the bunny lover in your life. Just enter the code BUNNYFRIEND at checkout, and you will receive 10% off your purchase!!

I asked Eden about her wonderful bunny graphics, and this is what she told me:

"I actually have been volunteering in cat rescue for years. I have worked in the cat rooms at my local shelter and have fostered over 30 cats and kittens. I also do all the graphic design for my local shelter, The Montgomery County Humane Society. Animal rescue is very close to my heart! My sister in law, however, is the big rabbit lover in the family. She also is a great supporter of my shop. All of the rabbit designs in my shop were inspired by her and her house rabbit Waldo, who she adopted from the House Rabbit Society a few years ago. "

Thank you Eden, for loving the animals, and give Waldo a big kiss for us!!

Bunnies With Star Quality!

Our foster bunnies are in a commercial!!

Our friend, Rebecca Sansom, made a movie several years ago called Equal Hoppertunity, about rabbits and the way society views them. She is now doing some ad swaps with rabbit-friendly companies to try and get the word out about her film, and arranged to do one with the Busy Bunny.

Busy Bunny is a wonderful company that makes bunny toys, and also has other rabbit related items. The owner, Lisa, has been wonderful to us in that she lets us order at wholesale prices to get toys for our foster bunnies. So when Rebecca asked if she could borrow some foster bunnies for the commercial we were happy to say yes.

We arranged to take Boomer and The Dude to Nashville for the filming, and I also contacted former foster bunny Fiona's person, Joan, to see if perhaps Fiona and her husbun Luke might like to be stars that day, since they live not far from Rebecca. She was very happy to say yes, and I have to say that Fiona and Luke really hammed it up for the cameras!

Oh, I'm in the commercial, too, as well as Joan. But several people have said that the cute bunnies, especially Rebecca's bunny, Tofu, are so distracting they didn't really notice the humans!

If you'd like to see the final Busy Bunny commercial, it's now on YouTube!

Petco and Petsmart Adoption Days

We had adoptions days at Petco and Petsmart this past Saturday. He is a wonderful, eight year old gentleman of a bunny who was brought to the shelter because his people were moving and could not take him to their new home. We are sure that at eight years old the situation has been confusing to Guinness.

In addition, although he was adopted out to a woman whom we thought was committed to loving and caring for him his whole life, she turned out not to be the person we thought she was, and for no fault of his own he has been returned to us again after just a few months at his new home.. We are definately going to be extra, extra picky about any future adopters for him - this boy deserves the best!

Guinness is very friendly and loveable, and enjoys being with people. Although he does not like to be picked up until he gets to know you he is happy to sit next to you (even in your lap) and be loved on. He has had a full vet exam and appears to be in very good health. Guinness' litter box skills have gotten very good since he has been neutered and he is beginning to figure out what toys are all about. He is generally a quiet and loveable bunny and would do well in a calm, adult home. We would love to see this older bunny have a happy home - forever!!

Wouldn't you love to have Guinness?! I want to thank the folks at Bunspace for making the holidays so much happier for our foster and Sanctuary bunnies. As a rescue, we have so little money that getting toys for the fosters is always last on our list, and although we try to improvise with inexpensive items, there is nothing like having a lovely wooden chew toy or some of those delicious bunny cookie treats.

Well, I assume they're delicious - I've never tried them!! They are best friends and must be adopted together. But in this case having two bunnies is twice as much fun! They love to play in their Cottontail Cottage and enjoy rearranging thier pen.

Reba is a bit calmer while Shania is busy, busy, busy all the time. We even have some veggies growing in the winter - cold hardy collard greens and kale.

I grew up in New Hampshire where we have a very short growing season, and I'm familiar with some of the tricks for extending that season into the cold weather. One of these tricks is to have veggies in "mini-greenhouses".

I've been using some of the cages that people have donated to us that are really too small for bunnies to make these mini-greenhouses. It's very easy! If you'd like to make a mini-greenhouse to grow your bunny some winter veggies, just get an old cage, preferably one that has a plastic bottom and wire top. Take the top off the cage, pop it over your plants, and than top with a clear shower curtain. Anchor the edges of the curtain with rocks and you have an enclosed space that will warm up quite nicely, providing a much better chance that you'll have veggies in January.

I knew that these greenhouses work well from using them in past years, but I didn't realise how well until we had a serious snowstorm last week. We don't usually get snow like this in Alabama. I saw all the snow covering the greenhouses and wrote off the veggies as having frozen. It's a parasite every bunny parent should check for periodically, as it can cause health problems. You can find a good article about coccidia here: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/coccidia.html

To check for this parasite, you will need to take a fresh sample of bunny poop to your vet. They will do what is called a "fecal float test", which will reveal the coccidia, if it is present. They can also prescribe the medication your bunny will need to get rid of this nasty critter!!

Since we have so many foster bunnies, we're lucky that we have our very own biologist who can do our tests for us. Every three months Bruce brings a sample from each bunny to his lab. We really appreciate his doing this for us (and I'm sure our vet does, too - since otherwise her techs would be tied up for hours with our samples!)

If we find a bunny has coccidia, we bring them in to our vet for a confirmation test and a prescription. They need to be rechecked in several weeks to make sure the parasite has been eradicated.

Today's test results? What could be inside?!!

Why it was a huge bunch of Bags For Buns treat bags from the kind folks at Bunspace!!

For those of you who don't know about Bunspace ( http://www.bunspace.com/) , it is the social networking site for rabbits. It's kind of like Myspace, but for bunnies!! The people who run Bunspace are very good to those of us in the rescue community and let us list our adoptable foster bunnies on the site.

They also have a Bags for Buns program at the holidays. With help from donations from the community they make treat bags for bunnies in foster programs. Last year the program went to a limited number of rescues, but this year it was opened up a bit more, and we were asked if we would like our foster bunnies to receive treat bags. Of course we said yes!!

It was such a thrill to open the box. There was a letter from the Bunspace folks, a wonderful 2011 Rabbit calendar (if you need a calendar, you should definately check this one out - it's beautiful! http://bunspace.3dcartstores.com/Bunspacecom-Rabbit-Calendar-2011_p_44.html ) and.....the treat bags!! They each contained an assortment of toys - hay stuffed t.p. roll, wooden toss toy, vine ball, willow ring, birdie bagel, dried fruit wrapped in an unbleached coffee filter (I love this one!), a timothy pumpkin cookie, and/or chew sticks.

I want to share the fun with some of our other members so I'm waiting for next weekend to hand them all out, but one of our bunnies needed a bag right away. Little Savannah got spayed on Wednesday, and came home from the vet feeling...a little too frisky! She chewed out a stitch before she even left the vet's office, so they e-collared her. On the way home she got the e collar off, so when we got home I put it on her again. She took it off. I put it back on. The next time I went to check on her, she was wearing it as a skirt. Fashionable, but unacceptable.

Clearly Savannah needed a diversion, so she got her Bunspace bag early!! Look at all those toys!!!

The kind folks at Bunspace asked for nothing in return except for pictures of the bunnies enjoying their bags, so here is little Savannah trying to decide what to have first (she went for the Timothy pumpkin cookie). The last time I checked on her, she was pushing around the toss toy, her e collar intact. Sigh - thank you Bunspace!!!

More pictures will be up as soon as we distribute the rest of the bags. And for those of you looking to contribute to a good cause - please think about donating to Bags For Buns next year. Two adult females (including sweet Bella, the white bunny with black stripes in the photo) and 12 babies were in this group. Again, they were too young to be adopted out. Huntsville Animal Services did not feel they could keep this group at the shelter and so, to avoid them being euthanised, we took them in, too!
We're happy to say that, although they have been a lot of work, everyone has been doing fine and the babies are now old enough and healthy enough to spay/neuter. We are posting them for adoption on our Petfinder site (http://www.huntsvillebunnies.petfinder.com/ ). They are very funny and cute!!

Getting to see goofy antics like these two boys (Boomer and Spike) laying on top of their brother, Charlie, has made all the work worthwhile!
